Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know before starting self defence training.
If you’re feeling unsure, nervous, or just want to understand how things work, you’re not alone.
These are the most common questions people ask before their first class.

Do I need to be fit before I start?

No. You don’t need any particular level of fitness to begin.
Most students start with average or low fitness, and improve naturally through training. Classes are structured to help you progress at your own pace.

Do I need any martial arts experience?

Not at all.
The majority of students are complete beginners when they start. Wing Chun is taught progressively, with skills introduced from day one.

Is Wing Chun suitable for beginners?

Yes — Wing Chun is one of the most beginner-friendly martial arts.
It doesn’t rely on flexibility, athleticism, or strength, and it can be trained just once or twice a week.

I’m nervous about my first class. Is that normal?

Completely normal.
Almost everyone feels nervous before their first session. Classes are welcoming, supportive, and focused on learning — not proving anything.

Is the training aggressive?

No.
Training is controlled, respectful, and safety-focused.
You’ll never be pushed into anything you’re uncomfortable with.
Self defence is taught calmly and progressively.

Do you do sparring or full contact fighting?

No competitive sparring.
Training focuses on drills, partner work, and controlled scenarios rather than sport fighting or knock-out sparring.

Will I get injured?

Injuries are rare.
Classes are supervised, techniques are taught gradually, and safety is prioritised at all times.

Is Wing Chun actually useful in real life?

Yes — when taught correctly.

Wing Chun focuses on:
Awareness and avoidance
Distance and timing
Simple, direct responses
Escaping safely rather than “winning”
It’s designed for real situations, not competitions.

How is this different from boxing, BJJ, or MMA?

Those are excellent arts — but they’re sports.

Wing Chun self defence focuses on:
Non-sport situations
No rules or referees
Awareness before physical engagement
Getting away safely, not prolonged fighting

Will this help with confidence and anxiety?

Many students find that it does.
Training builds awareness, self-belief, and calmness under pressure — which often carries into everyday life.

Is this suitable for women?

Yes. Many women train specifically for confidence and personal safety.
Wing Chun doesn’t rely on strength, making it especially effective for self defence.

What age can people start training?

Classes are open to ages 12 and up.
Younger students often train alongside parents or family members.

Can families train together?

Yes. Parents and teens frequently train in the same class.
Family discounts are available.

How often should I train?

Once a week is enough to make progress.
Twice a week (when available) accelerates learning.
Consistency matters more than intensity.

How does grading work?

There are 12 student grades, building progressively towards Technician level (equivalent to a black belt).
Grading is designed to support motivation and progression — not pressure.

Do I have to grade?

No. Grading is optional.
Some students train purely for self defence, fitness, or confidence.

Where are the classes held?

At the Health & Wellbeing Hub in Bilton, Harrogate.

What should I wear or bring?

Comfortable training clothes
Flat shoes or plimsolls
Open-hand gloves (later)
Gum shield (recommended)

You don’t need expensive equipment to start.

Can I just turn up to a class?

This ensures the class is prepared for you and you feel welcomed and supported from the start.
